Hellfire Club

The Hellfire Club as it has become known is located beside Killakee House and Massey's Woods above Tallaght on Montpelier Hill in the Dublin mountains. The house was originally called "Mount Pelier".
Originally built as a hunting lodge by William Connolly around 1725, it was said to have become a meeting place for The Hellfire Club, a group of well to do gentry of the era and a frequesnt venue for heavy drinking sessions, and occult activity.
Local folklore has it that the Devil appeared in the form of a stranger seeking shelter. A card game ensued, but suspecting the newcomer to be cheating a fellow guest looked under the table to find the stranger had cloven hooves for feet. The Devil disappeared and the panic that followed caused a tremendous fire to blaze through the building.
This folklore further added to the appropriateness of the buildings common name Hellfire Club.
