Its not every day you get to meet a real life Viking. Smiley Austmann is the real deal, for our photoshoot he brought lots of props many he's hand crafted himself from spears, swords, axes, and hides to the tunics and belts of a warrior king. Introduced to us by our fellow photographer Rafal we knew this was a shoot not to miss.
Smiley has featured in a lot of reenactments on and off television, and has had parts in the hugely popular Vikings series. Regularly involved in events demonstrating the traditions of a Viking lifestyle, they were far from the savage warriors history would have you believe, family had huge importance, trade aswell with many wealthy noble men amongst the Viking clans.
A few of my images from this set.
The noble merchant viking
Went for a dramatic portrait in black and white for this image full of character.
This image is a composite, I liked the idea of showing the Viking Smiley in a suitable scene. The backgound is from one of the lands of the Vikings, Iceland.
The weaponry Smiley brought with him was amazing many hand crafted spears, shields, swords, axes and staffs. This one I focused in on the tip of the spear which could be used as a defensive and offensive weapon in the right hands.
With more depth of field to bring the spear and its bearer into focus. Not sure i'd want to mess with this guy on the battlefield :)
This was a great photoshoot having the props on hand gave it a realism. Smiley was a great guy to work with. If you want to work with me on a photoshoot give me a call +353 87 148 2760
