Nifty Fifty | My Current Favourite lens | Dublin Photographer Jason Mac Cormac

Nifty Fifty as it's known, Canon 50mm 1.8 ll lens, what a great lens! For the price, less than 100 euro, this is a fantastic little lens from Canon.

The canon 50mm 1.8 lens has an aperture of 1.8 which is really wide and extremely useful for creating beautiful blurred backgrounds for portraits and detail images such as rings and flowers. Focus on the subject and even if they are located in front of a not so nice wall or background object the wall will blur and lose detail and this blurring of colour can result in a beautiful soft background.

It's a 50mm prime lens so no zoom. If you want to get closer to subject or move away from the subject you need to use a different form of zoom that attach to your legs (your feet) :) This has the added bonus of making you think creatively and get more involved in the taking of the image and can lead to more interaction with the subject and better images.

The lens is small and light which could also be a bonus for walkaround lens for candid shots and street photography. The only perceived downside I am aware of is the plastic feel compared to the more robust materials used in the more expensive lenses, to be honest this shouldn't really be a problem unless you like dropping lenses. I've had mine for two years and works fine. The 50mm 1.4 which has even wider aperture would be nice upgrade but it's 4-5 times the price.
