I love black and white or monochrome images. Stripping away the distraction of colour seems to emphasize the subject in the image and helps to capture the viewers attention.
Some photographers shoot almst only in monochrome. I guess I shoot mainly in colour, but always in my mind thinking if monochrome would be more apt. Occassionally I have taken images in colour that are probably fit for the bin, but knowing that the scene lent itself to mono ive kept the image and converted in post to remove tge colours sometimes boosting the contrast to further enhance the blacks and the whites in the image and sometimesthe difference is stark. The mono image or as I call it black and white can look fabulous due to the tones and contrast lending themselves to mono treatment.Thankfully others seem to agree with my eye for monochrome black and white images.
Recently I received second place in club competition for my image of Fanad Head Lighthouse. This image in colour I don't even display on my site as I dont like the colours in the scene, but I most definitely show the mono version as I really like and knew this was the form the picture would be even when I clicked the shutter. Last week I was even more surprised to be selected in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in this months mono competition. I was chuffed if not a little embarrassed at this small success. Certainly encourages me to shoot more!!
